Meditation for Alcohol Abuse
|
The effects of alcoholism, due to its damaging nature, extend to the physical body, the psychological realm, and social sphere ... including one's relationships and livelihood/occupation. Alcohol treatment has to address all these dimensions - the harmful effects of alcoholism - in some form or another.
In terms of the physical body, it's well known that alcoholism can result in hangovers. More serious damage often occurs to the liver, heart and nervous system. If a woman is pregnant, alcoholism can damage the unborn fetus and produce birth defects. Doctors and nutritionists have found a variety of supplements can help regenerate the liver and squash the free radical damage caused by acetaldehyde and malondialdehyde, which are alcohol metabolites. Free radical damage is one of the ways by which ethanol damages the liver. It also depresses an enzyme required to convert methionine to SAMe, whose deficiency can predispose one to liver cirrhosis. Supplementing with SAMe twice a day can help reverse alcoholic cirrhosis. More information can be found in the supplements section of this website. Chronic alcohol consumption can can constrict the arteries in the brain, leading to neurological problems. Magnesium supplementation, at 500-1,500 mg/day, can help keep cerebral blood vessels open as can the enzyme nattokinase, which rids the arteries of blood clots thus supplying an increased blood flow to the brain and extremities. European medications (Picamilon 50 mg 3X and pyritinol 200 mg 3X) are often used to help repair lost neurological function due to chronic ethanol intake. Glutamine can help cut alcohol cravings and restore the lining of the gut and its ability to absorb nutrients (any brand is fine). In terms of the social sphere, alcoholism affects the relationship with one's friends, family and even career. Various organizations provide guidance and counseling services for family and friends who must deal with an alcoholic. These include Alcoholics Anonymous (which provides mutual help for recovering alcoholics), and Al-anon and Alateen for the support of family and friends of alcoholics. By its very nature when used irresponsibly, alcohol can destroy your physical body, mental stability and social relationships. More information on how to heal your body of the effects of alcoholism can be found in the sections on meditation and nutritional supplements.
