Alcoholism is classified as a disease characterized by four symptoms:
(1) alcoholism involves a strong desire or craving to drink alcohol,
(2) a loss of control in not being able to stop drinking or regulate one's drinking,
(3) a growing physical dependence on alcohol that develops due to a consistent drinking habit, and which results in withdrawl symptoms when drinking is stopped for any long period of time
(4) a developing tolerance for alcohol that makes it harder to get high over time unless greater amounts of alcohol are ingested.
The AMA definition of alcohol (Langone) is that "alcoholism is an illness characterized by preoccupation with alcohol and loss of control over its consumption, such as to lead usually to intoxication by drinking; by chronicity, by progression and by a tendency toward relapse. It is typically associated with physical disability and impaired emotional, occupational and/or social adjustments as a direct consequence of persistent excessive use."
While the risk for alcoholism runs in families, and therefore there is a suspected genetic component to the condition, a large factor in the disease is the individual's life style and the fact that over-drinking is partially a behavioral issue that involves personal responsibility.
In truth, genes are never your destiny because it's what you wash over your genes (through the bloodstream due to the diet) that ultimately causes them to be expressed. When education has been provided and awareness awakened, there's always a factor of personal responsibility to the issue that canbe used to help one break the cycle of alcoholism.
If an individual leads a healthy life style, has good role models, excellent nutrition and superior ways to de-stress (such as through meditation), and avoids frequent and heavy drinking by choice, it is possible to stem alcoholism and alcohol abuse. Treatment programs that concentrate on those factors along with counseling usually have high success rates.
Alcoholism is often treated in detox centers through the use of nutritional supplements, medications (such as Valium), meditation, mental coping skills, dietary changes and support groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous. The drug naltrexone (ReVia) reduces the craving for alcohol while disulfiram (Antabuse) helps discourage drinking by making a person nauseous if they drink an alcoholic beverage.
There are a large variety of issues related to alcoholism and alcohol rehab, and we touch upon many of them through this website and through the useful links below:
